Preston County Board of Education
Policy 3-20 - Lesson Plans

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

A. Generally

The Preston County Board of Education recognizes that teachers make several types of lesson plans. They include Annual Plans, Program Course of Studies, and County Curriculum Guides that specify the goals and objectives that have been established for each grade level or curriculum area. Unit Plans developed by each teacher shall identify more specifically the skills, knowledge or information that is to be attained by students for a certain period of time and Daily Lesson Plans which are essential to effective teaching.

B. Annual Plans (County Curriculum Guides)

As required by State Board of Education Policy, the Central Office Staff, teachers, and principals will work together to formulate County Curriculum Guides for each subject area, K-12. The committees writing the curriculum guides shall utilize the Learner Outcomes promulgated by the State Board of Education as the basis for their work; however, it is clearly understood that the local school board can adopt learner outcomes that go beyond those of the state. State Learner Outcomes are the minimum standard and may be expanded according to the needs of local students.

C. Unit Lesson Plans

Unit Lesson Plans shall be utilized to break the annual plan down into manageable units, based upon the needs, interests and ability of the students. Unit goals should be clearly stated and a tentative time line should be established for achieving those goals. Evaluation procedures should be established as a part of the unit plan so that both student and teacher will be fully informed about the expectations for the class. Unit Lesson Plans will remain in the teacher's classroom at a location designated by the building principal.

D. Daily Lesson Plans

Daily Lesson Plans are essential to effective teaching. These plans should clearly state the objectives to be achieved each day and the teaching strategy or activities to be used in achieving them. Evaluation procedures should be included as a part of the daily plan as appropriate.

Teachers may find writing the daily objectives on the chalkboard as an effective means of keeping the students aware of classroom activities and their role in the educational process.

Each teacher shall be required to have lesson plans at least five (5) days in advance of the instruction, and the plan book shall remain in the classroom at a location designated by the principal. The daily plans are subject to review at the discretion of the building principal or Central Office Supervisor. Principals may request a copy for their files.
