A. Identification
All gifted and talented students shall be identified as early as possible by means by various diagnostic procedures as prescribed by state regulations. The superintendent or his designee shall develop a plan to provide appropriate education opportunities for these students.
B. Gifted Students
Students identified as gifted shall be offered curriculum appropriate to meet individual needs and functioning levels. Individualized instruction, special materials, and other techniques that the superintendent or his designee deem necessary shall be used in order that these students may progress as rapidly and fully as practical.
C. Talented Students
The board recognizes that certain students are talented in special areas such as art, music, drama, creative writing, the sciences, etc. Efforts shall be made to identify these students and the areas in which they are talented. The staff shall encourage and direct these students into programs of a local or regional nature that will most effectively develop these talents.
D. Advanced Entrance and Advanced Placement
Gifted students who have successfully completed an appropriate battery of tests administered by personnel certified to conduct such testing may qualify for advanced entrance or advanced placement in the schools of Preston County. The results of such tests must clearly demonstrate that the child has sufficient emotional and mental competency to warrant such advanced entrance or advance placement.
All students tested under this policy must meet the minimum criteria for giftedness as set forth by the State Board of Education before they can be considered for any gifted program.
