Now that we are into the holiday season, there are a few things you should know. Whenever possible, you should take your vacation or family trip during school holidays. Avoid taking your child on holiday at critical times during their education, e.g. at the beginning of the academic year – especially if they change schools, or when your child should be taking exams or tests. You should not expect your child’s school to agree to a family holiday during the school term. The school will carefully consider educational leave requests and may take your child’s attendance into account. You must ask for an educational leave request form and turn it in at least two weeks prior to the leave date. Students may be asked to present information from their educational leave experience. All make up work must be completed. Preston County School’s Calendar shows an ISE day on Dec. 21 and Christmas/ New Year’s holidays Dec. 24 through and including Jan.1, 2008. Have a happy and safe holiday from Preston County Schools

NOW THAT YOU HAVE BEGUN TO GET INTO THE SWING OF SCHOOL AND YOU LOOK BACK TO ALL THE FREEDOM YOU HAD IN THE SUMMER TO GO AND DO THINGS WITH YOUR CHILDREN, YOU MAY BE ASKING YOURSELF, WHY MUST MY CHILD FO TO SCHOOL REGULARLY? HAVING A GOOD EDUCATION WILL HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE THE BEST POSSIBLE START IN LIFE. HERE ARE A FEW REASONS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY:

  • THEY WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH SCHOOLWORK
  • EMPLOYERS WILL WANT TO BE SURE THAT THE PEOPLE THEY ARE HIRING BE RELIABLE. CHILDREN WHO ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING A JOB.
  • CHILDREN AT SCHOOL ARE AT LESS RISK OF BECOMING VICTIMS OF CRIME OR ABUSE.

WHAT CAN A PARENT/GUARDIAN DO TO HELP THEIR CHILD/CHILDREN IN SCHOOL? THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IS TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD GOES TO SCHOOL REGULARLY, ARRIVES ON TIME AND KEEPS TO THE SCHOOL’S RULES OF ATTENDING ALL LESSONS. START THESE GOOD HABITS AT AN EARLY AGE WHILE YOUR CHILD IS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL AND YOU WILL MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR YOURSELF IN THE LONG RUN. HERE ARE A FEW MORE TIPS:

  • IF YOUR CHILD STARTS MISSING SCHOOL FOR AN UNEXCUSED REASON, HELP THE SCHOOL TO PUT THINGS RIGHT. WORK TOGETHER AND MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD UNDERSTANDS THAT YOU DO NOT APPROVE OF THEM MISSING SCHOOL.
  • TAKE AN INTEREST IN YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOLWORK.
  • SUPPORT THE SCHOOL IN ITS EFFORTS TO CONTROL BAD BEHAVIOR.
